Nitrate concentrations were low throughout the study area. In the Baltic Proper oxygen concentrations were below 2 ml/l at depths exceeding 65 to 80 metres. Hydrogen sulphide was found in the eastern Gotland Basin deeper than 125 metres, and in the northern and western Gotland Basin deeper than 100 to 125 metres.
