Summary

A new agreement with the Swedish Coastguard caused a shorter cruise, consequently only the Swedish west coast and parts of the southern Baltic Proper (Arkona and Bornholm Basins) were visited. In addition, the weather situation in Skagerrak caused that Å17 was only partially sampled. The species diversities were very high in the Kattegat and the Skagerrak but the cell counts were low. In the Skagerrak area most large species where represented by diatoms, eg. Cerataulina pelagica, Ditylum brightwellii, Dactyliosolen fragilissimus och Pseudo-nitzschia spp. The phytoplankton community at Anholt where on the contrary dominated by dinofl agellates mainly by Ceratium fusus and Prorocentrum micans. The southern Baltic, BY2 Arkona Deep and BY5 Bornholm Deep, where dominated by small cryptomonads, the ciliate Mesodinium rubrum and species from the class Craspedophyceae. The integrated (0-20 m) chlorophyll a concentrations were lower than normal in most parts of the Skagerrak and the Kattegat. Chlorophyll a concentrations at the Arkona Deep were lower than normal and at the Bornholm Deep higher than normal. This report is a shortened version because of lack of events in the phytoplankton world.
