VINDRAD+ Gap-filling radars as a method for reducing the conflict between weather radars and wind turbines

VINDRAD+ creates conditions to open up for the construction of more wind turbines near a weather radar by installing a gap-filling radar

Wind turbines near or in line-of-sight of a weather radar can have a negative impact of the radar's measurements. For this reason, few wind turbines are today approved for construction near a weather radar. One way to open up for the construction of more wind turbines near a weather radar is by installing a gap-filling radar.

VINDRAD+ will develop methods to evaluate the quality of data from a gap-filling radar and implement them in a calculation tool. The calculation tool will be able to handle wind turbine applications from everywhere in Sweden and will serve as a basis for decision by the Swedish Armed Forces. This will result in a fast and objective processing of wind turbine applications, taking into account both main- and gap-filling radar.

Role of SMHI
