Hydrological modelling

Hydrological Modelling and forecasting

SMHI boasts expert hydrologists with strong expertise in field work, data analysis, research, modelling, forecasting and developing products spanning for all water environments.

We work with an holistic approach to solve water related issues by taking into account the combined effect of weather, climate, water and ocean. Our diverse and comprehensive team has leading skills in a wide range of sectors covering hydrological and hydrodynamic modelling, different time range hydrological forecasting, climate impact evaluation, floods and droughts, statistical analysis, regulation of reservoirs, dam safety and water management.

Our main areas of expertise are:

  • Energy
  • Climate Change
  • Environment and Ecosystem
  • Surface and Groundwater
  • Agriculture
  • Urban water
  • Industry
  • Coastal
  • Environmental risk
  • Mining

We help public and private organizations ensuring quality, health, safety and sustainable development through a wide range of hydrology-related products and services:

  • Model simulations and data delivery
  • Warning services
  • Operational hydrological services
  • Web-based tailored tools for visualization and support of decision-making
  • User friendly softwares
  • Model licenses
  • Training and courses
  • International cooperation

OUR HYDROLOGICAL MODELS

Our products are based on the two SMHI’s hydrological models:

  • HBV: a world-wide known hydrological model used for several applications (hydropower, dam safety, climate change, flood warnings, etc.). SMHI provides licenses for commercial and non-commercial users as well as training courses and support.
    Read more:
  • HYPE: a hydrological model that simulates both water quantity and quality (concentration of P and N). The model is set up to simulate the water balance over vast regions and also for ungauged catchments. SMHI provides training course, model-setup support and data delivery at different time and spatial scales.
