Create your future – a climate-adapted society in 50 years

By adapting society in line with climate change, we can avoid being affected too badly by the short- and long-term effects of climate change. We need to identify solutions from a broader perspective, and work in new partnerships. People from different disciplines and sectors need to meet up and think together in a supportive environment. Climate change adaptation can and should lead to an even better society than the one we have today. But what might things look like when society is equipped to deal with climate change?

A tool for creating images of the future

SMHI has developed a workshop tool for you and your organisation to create your own images of the future of a climate-adapted society. Working in groups, you can discuss and tackle questions about how your business needs to change in order to deal with the climate challenges of the future.

Your own climate strategies and action plans are a good basis for the workshop. This provides a common understanding of the challenges and effects that will have an impact on your business.

After the workshop, we hope that:

  • You have created a shared vision of the goal of climate change adaptation work – this is how we want a climate-adapted society to look and function!
  • The results can be used as data for future strategies and action plans.

Using figures and objects, construct your own future

Workshop där fem personer samarbetar och skapar en bild av framtiden.

The images you create consist of one or more background images, figures and objects that you place on the backgrounds. The background images are based on seven challenges that may arise as the climate changes, but the images can also be used for other issues.

There are several different background images to choose from – urban and rural, river basins and coastal areas, infrastructure and agricultural landscapes, and more. The graphics package for the workshop includes buildings, people, animals and nature that you can place together on your chosen backgrounds.

Based on the background and the challenges that are relevant to you, you will discuss issues such as:

  • How have people’s attitudes and behaviours changed?
  • Which vulnerable groups are there, and how do we need to think in order to protect them?
  • How will we live and move around?
  • Which policy instruments will be used in a climate-adapted society?

About the ‘Create your future’ workshop tool

‘Create your future’ is based on a concept developed by the Swedish Expert Council on Climate Adaptation (First report, February 2022), which SMHI has further developed.

Target audience:
The workshop tool is primarily aimed at people who work with or have responsibility for climate change adaptation within municipalities, agencies or organisations. Students, politicians and interested members of the public can of course also use the tool. The concept can also be used to generate interest among other target groups.

How to use it:
The tool can be used at the start, during the process, or as a summary when drawing up climate change adaptation plans and strategies.

Number of participants:
The workshop can be conducted in both small and large groups. When producing images of the future, you will need to work in small groups of up to six people to ensure that everyone has their say. The workshop is led by a designated person.

Time required:
You need to set aside about three hours for the actual workshop. Before the workshop, you need to set aside time for preparation. The time needed may vary depending on the situation and the organisation. Remember to set aside time for follow-up work as well.
