SNÖFALL
SNÖFALL is a project that aims to develop methods for snow condition monitoring in the Swedish mountains based on satellite observations. The information will contribute to support predictions for avalanche hazards, flood warnings and hydropower regulation.
The project aims to develop and implement satellite-based solutions with radar or altimetry technology, field-collected observations and numerical modelling. These monitoring solutions will provide high-resolution observations of snow depth, snow amount for hydrological forecasts, and, together with the detection of avalanche activity, for avalanche hazard forecasts.
SMHI participates as leader and developer
SMHI, in collaboration with the other partners, leads the project and is involved in the method development for snow-monitoring systems. Colleagues from our research and observation departments will contribute by conducting field observations, enhancing hydrological forecasts with satellite data and numerical modeling, and advancing related research.
