Climate Adaptation for Rural Livelihoods in Zimbabwe (CARL) – Phase 2
CARL2 aims to reduce the vulnerability of rural livelihoods to climate change in Zimbabwe. Targeting 20,000 households across four districts over 36 months, the project focuses on enhancing food security, promoting gender equity, and ensuring sustainable rural livelihoods.
The project is coordinated by Oxfam and financed by SIDA, the project primarily operates in rural areas in collaboration with local partner organizations.

Field visits are important to ensure that the rural communities recieve the climate information and forecasts they need.
SMHI's role in the project is as a technical consultant working together with hydro-meteorological institutions in Zimbabwe towards enhanced hydro-meteorological products, dissemination and use. The overall aim is to adapt by building resilience toward natural disasters in present and future climates.
Effective agriculture and water management require reliable climate risk information. Therefore, SMHI's involvement focuses on strengthening data management, improving forecasting capabilities, and enhancing the dissemination of information through technical training and capacity building as well as co-design and co-development.
Key outputs of SMHI’s work in CARL2 include improved data management at hydro-meteorological services, improved meteorological forecasting and modelling as well as enhanced hydro-meteorological products tailored for smallholder farmers, dissemination and use. The assumption is that access to accurate climate information and forecasts will help enhance resilience against floods, droughts, and other climate-related challenges.
An example of the positive result in the project can be read in Oxfam's "Success Stoy" which describes how women and youth taking great strides in household resilience building using meteorological information.
