Strong Legal Protection for Whistleblowers

The Act (2021:890) on the Protection of Persons Reporting Misconduct, also known as the Whistleblower Act, is based on the EU Whistleblower Directive.

The law provides protection for those who report misconduct in the public interest. This protection includes confidentiality of the whistleblower’s identity and protection against retaliation from the employer. This means that the employer may not attempt to prevent a whistleblower from reporting or expose them to negative consequences. Negative consequences may include changes to work duties, withheld salary, or dismissal. The employer is also prohibited from attempting to discover the whistleblower’s identity.
