Summary

The surface water temperatures were: In the Skagerrak 3.5°C - 5.3°C, the Kattegat -0.5°C - 2.7°C and in the Baltic 1.2°C - 3.4°C. The nutrient concentrations in the surface layer in the Kattegat showed lower and chlorophyll much higher values than expected for the season. This means that the production in this area had already started. Diatoms are the dominant species. In the other areas the surface concentration of nutrients were normal for the winter season. Hydrogen sulphide is present in the Eastern Gotland Basin at station BY20 below 175 meters and at station BY15 in the interval 190-200 meters. No hydrogen sulphide was detected in the Bornholm basin.
