New features to improve the Climate Change Scenario tool
SMHI’s Climate Change Scenario tool is now easier to use. Several of the improvements are based on user feedback such as the option to download images, revised guiding texts for climate indicators, and adjusted colour scales in maps.
The Climate Change Scenario tool on smhi.se shows how Sweden’s climate may change in the future. It provides information about a number of different indicators, such as future temperature, precipitation, water flow and marine environment. The tool is used by people working with climate adaptation and spatial planning, and helpful in order to understand how climate change may affect us as well as to plan for a future climate.
– We want it to be easy to both find and understand the information in the Climate Change Scenario tool. These changes are intended to make it easier for users to access the results and apply them in their work, says Maria Norman, project manager.
Map images can now be downloaded
One of the new features is the option to download map images from the service in PNG format. The downloaded image reflects what is shown in the interactive map, and the feature is also available for maps showing reference period, robustness and standard deviation.
The map service now includes buttons for downloading both GIS data and images. A download link is also available below the map.
Revised guiding texts
It is now also easier to find information directly in the service about what the different climate indicators show. Previously, the guiding text attached to the question mark icon, displayed general description of what a climate indicator is. Now the text contains a definition of that specific indicator.
Updated colour scales
For some climate indicators, the colour scales and intervals have been updated. The aim is to make the information in the maps clearer and easier to interpret.
The changes are part of the ongoing development of the tool based on users’ needs. During 2026, work is also under way to increase user dialogue as well as continuous development of the tool.
– The Climate Change Scenario tool shall give users access to relevant climate information in a clear and useful way. Therefore, we need to continue developing both the content and the way the information is presented. Continued dialogue with users of the tool is very important to our work, says Maria Norman.
