    Sea levels & waves

    Information about the service

In the map, the latest observation in all position is represented by a colour according to the legend below the map. If SMHI has issued a sea level warning for any area, this is marked with a background colour according to the legend.

Significant wave height resembles the height of a wave that you would visually estimate as the wave height. Mathematically, it is calculated as the average height of the highest third of the waves in a wave field. The height of a single wave (maximum wave height) can be twice as high.

    The forecasts in the service

The ocean circulation model that is used to make the sea level forecasts presented in the service exist in two horizontal resolutions. The different setups can result in different forecasts.

Short forecast: The forecast called "Short forecast" in the diagram is from a model with a resolution of 1 nautical mile. It provides 60-hour forecasts.

Long forecast: The “Long forecast” is from a model set up with a 2 nautical mile resolution that provides longer projections.

Wave forecast: The forecast displayed for waves is from a wave model. It is available in one set up and is called "Wave forecast" in the diagram.

    Observations from different sources

Beside measurements made by SMHI, observations that are owned or supplied by other data providers is shown in the service. For each station this is show under the name in the diagram.

Sweden: SMHI, Port of Uddevalla, CTH - Chalmers University of Technology
Denmark: DMI - Danish Meteorological Institute
Germany: BSH - Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie, WSA – Wasserstraßen-  und Schifffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes
Polen: IMWM - Institute of Meteorology and Water Management
Latvia: LEGMA - Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre
