Size: Apical axis 1.2-13 µm, transapical axis 0.7-1.5 µm, pervalvar axis 1.5-3 µm

Distinctive features: Often with two pili on the concave valve, convex valve with a central tubular process, with ocelluli. In living cells the pili are not crossed. Best studied in TEM

Similar species: A. mammifer

Distribution: Arctic and temperate waters of the northern hemisphere, New Zealand
