Only then will you have time to take preventive measures to minimize the impact.
SMHI Customized Weather Alerts, three package solutions
SMHI offers three alert package solutions. Each solution contains customized alerts, access to a web interface and the possibility to contact a meteorologist during uncertain weather conditions.
- Wind & snow
Produced between 15 September and 30 April
- Thunder & lightning
The possibility to receive alerts on thunder risk forecasts, lightning strikes or short forecast of lightning strikes.
Produced between 15 April and 15 October
- Total Customized Weather Alerts
Includes both Wind & snow and Thunder & lightning. During summer, subscribers receive alerts for wind and you also have access to the lightning archive all year around.
How SMHI Customized Weather Alerts works
The size and shape of alert areas, alarm parameters and threshold values are determined in consultation with SMHI when the service is started.
- When a weather alert is issued for your area, you will receive a text message or an e-mail which describes parameters and the highest threshold value exceeded.
- In the message received you click on a link which will open a web interface.
- In web interface you can follow the expected development of the alert parameters, and you can also read the meteorologists important comments.
- Estimate how the weather occurrence affects your business.
The web interface
The web interface is adapted to work with computer screens, tablets and smartphones. It will give you:
- Easy overview over your alert parameters and alert areas.
- Map presentations with wind, wind gusts, wind direction, snow, precipitation and temperature forecasts.
- Precipitation Radar
- 7-day forecast which clarifies the risk in the prognosis
- Mesoscale Analysis, calculated observations.
- Observations from SMHI’s Weather stations in an easier way.
Alert parameters and forecast data are based on probability forecasts, which makes it easier to understand how great a risk there is that a weather occurrence hits your particular alert area. It is possible to see how large the spread or uncertainty is for different parameters in the 7-day forecasts. Forecasts are updated every three hours and extend seven days forward in the web interface.
