Researcher in physical parametrizations for numerical weather prediction reference 464

The research department of SMHI consists of about 100 researchers funded both internally and externally. We work normally in projects with focus on applied research, quality insurance and long-term perspective. The work environment is characterized by flexible working arrangements, responsibility and personal development. The unit “Meteorological Research” conducts research and development of weather prediction models, assimilation of observations and applications of forecast data for Scandinavia and Europe. Today the group consists of 12 researchers.

Information on the group can be found here:

We are seeking a researcher for a 2-year position in the field of meteorology or related areas. You will strengthen our research activities concerning atmospheric processes and parametrizations, e.g. for cloud micro- and macrophysics, precipitation, radiation and the boundary layer. The work will consist of modelling and programming in our Numerical Weather Prediction system HARMONIE-AROME which is part of the shared ALADIN-HIRLAM NWP system. You will work on the improvement of our current physical parameterizations through data analysis, numerical experiments and theoretical studies. As the model system is used for daily operational forecasts in our MetCoOp collaboration, the research contains both short-term improvements in the model, and longer-term developments. The research will be coordinated within the HIRLAM-ALADIN network.

Expected qualifications

The applicant should have university education in meteorology, natural science or other related topic with a focus on numerical modelling of physical systems. Experience with numerical weather prediction is beneficial.  The work requires knowledge in programming language, such as C++, C or Fortran. Good knowledge is required in Linux/Unix.

You should like to work in a team and also in an operational environment. High level of English is required both in spoken and written form. The position is limited to 2 years based in Norrköping.
