Radar Expert at the SMHI Research Department ref. no. 168

The atmospheric remote sensing group is working with research and development in remote sensing (weather radar and satellite) as well as applications of this data. Our results are used for operational forecasts and products, as well as for model validation and to further understanding of geophysical processes. We are now looking for a researcher within the field of weather radar applications. The position is a fulltime, unlimited contract with placement in Norrköping.

Radar data is not only used to describe precipitation and winds in real time, but is increasingly used quantitatively in meteorological and hydrological models and analyses. This leads to more stringent requirements on data and product quality. The Swedish radar network is currently undergoing modernization, which provides opportunities to introduce improved data processing algorithms, and opens up new application areas. Work content varies and spans from contributing to the development of operational radar products to international radar collaborations and climatological radar applications. Writing research proposals which support SMHI’s radar activities are part of the work.

Your profile

You have a strong theoretical background in radar technology, and have a desire to contribute to developments aimed at direct use in operational radar applications. You may have a background in physics, space physics, civil engineering or meteorology. You already have research experience within radar applications and preferably have a PhD. Previous experience in meteorology is an advantage as is having worked in international collaborations.

You should possess good programming skills. We work in a Linux environment and use primarily C and Python.

You have excellent cooperation skills, are result driven and take initiative. You communicate results well both internally and externally, and are fluent in both Swedish and English. We also accept applicants not speaking Swedish, but you are required to learn the Swedish language.
