Elin Almroth
ELIN ALMROTH I have been employed at SMHI since April 2003 and will be working mainly with the biogeochemical model SCOBI. I will be working with the development of the model regard to the sediment-water exchange of nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen. I also work with the HABILE project, in which the SCOBI model coupled to the hydrodynamic model HIROMB is used. I finished my master studies in Chemistry at Göteborg University in spring 2002. My master thesis was about the influence of resuspension on sediment-water solute exchange. Project:
LARS AXELL I started my graduate studies at SMHI in 1995, which resulted in a Ph. D. thesis in 2001. The research topic was turbulent mixing applied to Baltic Sea modeling. The research contributed to the Baltic Sea Experiment (BALTEX) and the Diapycnal Mixing Experiment (DIAMIX). At present, I'm working on two different projects. The first project is related to Baltic Sea ice climate and is funded by the Swedish Maritime Administration. The project deals with the historical ice climate of the Baltic Sea as well as its possible future ice climate. The second project is called IRIS (Ice Ridging Information for Decision Making in Shipping Operations) and is funded by the European Union, under its 5th Framework Programme. The project aims at including ice ridging information in the ice model coupled to the three-dimensional baroclinic ocean model HIROMB (High-Resolution Operational Model of the Baltic) used by SMHI. Main interests: Turbulence modeling, climate dynamics and ice dynamics. Projects:
KARIN BORENÄS Ph. D. (1988), Post. Doc. WHOI (1990-1992). Associate professor (1996). Employed at SMHI 2000 at the Department of Oceanographic Services and, since 2001, head of the oceanographic research unit at the Research and Development Department. Been involved in EU-projects VEINS and CANIGO. Is currently in charge of the BOOS SST-project with the aim to produce daily SST-charts. Also working within the EU-projects ODON and IRIS. Member of the Swedish National Committee for Geodesy and Geophysics. Swedish delegate in ICES Working Group on Oceanic Hydrography. Main interests: Deep-water overflows and marine data analysis. Projects:
KARI EILOLA Ph. D. (1998). Since spring 2003, I have been working at the SMHI oceanographic research unit at the Research and Development Department. My research concerns the development of oceanographic and biogeochemical models. I have earlier been working with oceanographic research at Göteborg University (1992-1999) and at Ocean Origo AB (1999-2003). Main interests: Oceanographic and biogeochemical modelling.
LENNART FUNKQUIST I started my career at SMHI coming from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and since the beginning of the 90's, I have mainly been involved in the development of operational ocean models and wind wave models. I developed and implemented the first operational ocean model at SMHI 1991 and at about the same time I revised and implemented the operational wind wave model. The first operational runs of a 3D ocean model started in 1995 as a result of a co-operation with BSH, the corresponding operational in Germany. In parallel, I have almost continuously been involved in different EU-projects like DYNOCS, BASYS, CARTUM and ODON. My involvement in these projects reflects my ambition to build stronger links between the European oceanographic community. Particularly, I have engaged myself into the main European networks for operational oceanography. Project:
