HABILE

The aim of HABILE (Harmful Algae Bloom Initiation in Large European Marine Ecosystems) is to assess and quantify the environmental conditions required for the formation of identified HAB in three European Large Marine Ecosystem. HABILE´s objectives will be achieved through a co-ordinated integrated observational and modelling approach. The project will focus on the analysis of long-term time series (up to 10 years) of in situ monitoring and satellite ocean colour data for improved understanding of the conditions of formation of regionspecific HAB. The model predictions will under different anthropogenic forcing scenarios be used to asses the impact a reduction of nutrient load may have on HAB occurrence and ecosystem functioning in the Baltic Sea, The North Sea and the Northern Iberian coast. The socio-economic impact of a reduction of HAB events will be assessed for fisheries/aquaculture, tourism, food industries through a project dedicated industrial/governmental organisation user reference group.
