| Environmental assessment in Sweden On commission from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (NV) MATCH is used for annual assessments of sulfur and nitrogen deposition over Sweden and surrounding waters. For this application a ten component chemical scheme for sulfur, oxidized and reduced nitrogen is used. The chemical scheme is based on the one used in the European scale EMEP work. MATCH is driven by detailed objective meteorological analyses on 20 km resolution, national emission estimates for sulfur and nitrogen and a high resolution database for topography and land use. Typical results from the annual assessments are maps showing the contribution from Swedish sources, long-range transport and total deposition.
The long-range transport contribution to the total air pollution situation is obtained by a combination of measured daily data from 10-40 background air and precipitation chemistry stations and model results from the MATCH-Sweden area. In order to check the accuracy in these calculations careful comparisons have been made with available independent air chemistry measurements. These estimates of the long range transport contribution have a much more detailed geographical resolution compared to what can be obtained from European scale dispersion models.
