Meteorology

The research in the field of meteorology covers a range of topics including:

- development of short-range weather forecasts  (up to 48 hours)
- nowcasting (up to 12 hours)
- basic physical processes in the climate system
- remote sensing (satellite and RADAR)
- measurements of radiation and total ozone
- modelling of tracer transport, deposition and atmospheric chemistry

There is a strong emphasis on modelling, the core model being the numerical weather prediction model HIRLAM. Much of the other modelling work is coupled to HIRLAM. Important models and analysis systems include MESAN, the meso-scale meteorological analysis system, SCANDIA, the cloud classification model using satellite data, RAVE, the radar visualisation environment, and MATCH, the regional tracer transport and chemistry model.
