Current status

Currently development is going on in order to arrive at a new and improved high resolution classification model to be valid in any user defined area from northern Europe (around 50 degrees north) to the polar regions. This work is carried out in connection with the pilot EUMETSAT SAF (Satellite Application Facility) to support Nowcasting and Very Short Range Forecasting, The Nowcasting SAF is a project involving 4 Eumetsat member states: Besides Sweden (SMHI) the participants are France (Meteo-France), Austria (ZAMG) and Spain (INM). SMHI also participates in the Climate monitoring SAF, hosted by the German Meteorological Service((DWD). Here, SMHI will contribute in the retrieval of cloud parameters for regional climate studies. The SAF projects are scheduled to finish in 2002-2003.
