APPLICATION OF THE WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE IN THE KAGGEBO BAY DRAINAGE AREA

Farmers within the Kaggebo bay drainage area have the desire to be one step ahead of authorities and initiate a practical application on the local scale of the EU Water Framework Directive. They have therefore imitated a project that aims to be a pilot project of local implementation of the directive. The project will consist of voluntary and action oriented activities, and will be based on cooperation with local authorities, the county administrative board, farm advisers, researchers, and inhabitants in the drainage area (e.g. owners of summer houses).

The project is managed by the farmers union in the county of Östergötland, with researchers from SMHI and Linköping University acting as mentors. SMHI:s main task within the project is to, in an interactive process with the farmers and other stakeholders, use models to assess source apportionment and the impact of various scenarios on riverine flow of nitrogen and phosphorus to the Kaggebo bay.
