Swedish Ice Service

Products, Forecasts

Mapping of sea ice, as well as compilation of climate statistics, are tasks performed by SMHI acting as a public authority.

Different shipping activities often also need information on the expected changes to ice conditions (based on wind, temperature and ice formation/ice drift) to various ports in the Baltic Sea 5-10 days ahead.
Ice forecasts are of particular importance to the Ice Breaking Department within the Swedish Maritime Administration, this as the Ice Breaking Department is responsible for safeguarding navigation in ice infested Swedish waters.
Tailor-made SMHI products of this type can be ordered separately but are however not free of charge.

Another commercial product developed to meet the needs of shipping is the Ice Bulletin. The Ice Bulletin is produced daily and consists of a summary on present ice conditions in the Baltic waters, both in text form and in code (Baltic Sea Ice Code, please see explanation above) as well as a daily ice chart. Mondays and Thursdays, a 5-day weather and ice forecast is added.
