Ice codes

- Baltic Sea Ice Code. Is used for describing the ice conditions in ports, fairways, coastal areas and certain ship routes as breifly as possible.

The code is based on 5 digits. The first identifyes a fairway or a coastal section. The remaining four digits describe the ice.
Explanation of Baltic Sea Ice Code

Symbols found on the ice chart. The International Sea Ice Nomenclature is used and two main symbol types occur:

  • Raster type. Different rasters and symbols dedicated to ice concentration and type of ice. Is presented in black and white or in colour.
  • So called ’egg code’. Presents detailed information on ice thickness, ice concentration, floe size and form of ice for a given ice area using a special code.
