A sustainable environment and climate development are prerequisites for a sustainable use of ocean and its resources. SMHI provides the individual, government, researchers and the international community with data, forecasts and scenarios, and current information.

A new research programme to achieve an improved understanding of the Earth system for the Baltic Sea region

A new international and interdisciplinary research programme, Baltic Earth, is launched. The aim of Baltic Earth is to achieve an improved understanding of the Earth system for the Baltic Sea region, focusing on physical and biogeochemical processes which interact in the atmosphere, in the sea including sea ice, and on land. Human interactions with the environment are recognized as an important part of the regional Earth system.

A research project into ocean acidification has increased knowledge about conditions in the Baltic Sea and Kattegat-Skagerrak. When the pH value falls, the whole marine ecosystem is affected.

How has the climate in the Baltic Sea varied over the past 150 years? How will it develop up to the year 2100? A new research project will analyse how the climate in the Baltic Sea has varied since 1850 and simulate future scenarios for the Baltic Sea.

Ocean Monitoring in Europe standardised in the MyOcean mega project. SMHI and more than 60 other institutes is working on EU MyOcean project. The monitoring of all oceans from the Black Sea to the Barents Sea is to be combined and downscaled which will improve oceanographic forecasts. ECOSUPPORT

Weather and oceanographic data from icebreakers

Weather and oceanographic data are now transferred in real-time from the icebreakers Oden, Frej and Atle via satellites. The icebreakers operate primarily in the Gulf of Bothnia but are available for the whole Baltic Sea region if needed. Oden also operates in Arctic and Antarctic waters during certain years.

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

Environmental Indicators

SMHI has developed a range of indicators describing every year the environmental status. These are used both nationally and internationally, for example within HELCOM cooperation. The indicators describe on a yearly basis the development of salinity, stratification, oxygen, water exchange, river run-off, cyanobacteria blooms and the spatial distribution of winter nutrients.

SMHI has developed a number of "climate indicators" that can be used to follow the climate change in Sweden. The climate indicators show deviations in temperature, precipitation, geostrofical wind and sea level.
