Swedish ice service

The assignment for the Swedish Ice Service is:

  • Collect and map the Sea Surface Temperature, SST, conditions in Skagerrak, Kattegat, Baltic Proper, Gulf of Bothnia, Gulf of Finland, Gulf of Riga and Lake Vänern twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays all year.
  • Map the ice conditions in above mentioned areas as well as on Lake Mälaren daily during the winter period November – May.
  • Provide information on present ice conditions and ice restrictions.
  • On request, issue ice formation/ice drift forecasts (service not free of charge).
  • Keep an updated database comprising general ice conditions in the Baltic region, from 1961 to present.
  • Keep a detailed database (Baltic Sea Ice Code) including ice conditions to large number of Swedish fairways and ports.
  • Provide expertise on ice related inquiries (service not free of charge).

Available online through a cooperation with the Swedish Maritime Administration:

  • daily ice chart (published ~09:30 UTC)
  • ice report (published ~10:00 UTC)
  • ice restrictions (published ~10:00 UTC)
  • fairway codes (published ~10:30 UTC)

Our office hours during the winter period December - May: weekdays 07.30 - 15.30 UTC, Saturdays and Sundays 08.30 - 13.00 UTC.
