Dam safety

SMHI carries out hydrological model calculations which can be used for dam safety design flood computations. The flow calculations are carried out both for today's climate conditions and for an expected future climate

User area

Model-based calculated and dimensioned flows are used for facilities where a dam failure would have extremely serious consequences. The method is also used for the analysis of flood risks

SMHI offers

  • The determination of dimensioned flows and water levels
  • The analysis of the sensitivity of climate changes with the help of climate scenarios
  • The dimensioning calculations which comply with the requirements for documentation and quality assurance

Model calculations and the impact of the weather

Determining the dimensioned flow of dams is based on model calculations. By using the HBV model, flows and water levels are described when affected by extreme amount of precipitation under particularly unfavourable conditions.
