Solar radiation

How often does the sun shine? SMHI has measured solar radiation since 1983. Observed values can be supplemented by computer-modelled values for any location in Sweden.

Where are these measurements taken?

In the column on the right there is a map which you can zoom in and out of and an Excel file which shows where our solar radiation stations are, which also provides a description of them. There are 15 automatic stations in Sweden. Direct solar radiation is measured only in Kiruna, Norrköping and Visby.

If data is lacking in the area you are interested in, you can receive estimated solar radiation figures from SMHI's computer model STRÅNG. From a selected location, it is possible to download global radiation, direct solar radiation and the amount of hours of sunshine on an hourly basis. Calculations in STRÅNG are based on analyses of weather observations, radar and satellite information.

How is the data compiled?

Examples of solar radiation parameters and other data from our solar stations include:

  • Global radiation
  • Sunshine duration
  • Direct solar radiation (measured at 3 stations)
  • Long-wave solar radiation (measured at 5 stations)
  • Air temperature
  • Relative humidity

Sunshine duration is defined as the amount of time which direct radiation exceeds 120 W/m². When there are thin clouds in front of the sun, the duration of sunshine starts to be registered approximately when the shadow contours are weak but are nevertheless visible.
