Research Scientist ref no 1617

The Oceanography Unit at the Research Department at SMHI is working on short and medium range ice-ocean forecasts in the Baltic and North Sea and in the Arctic Ocean, data assimilation, process studies, climate modeling and analysis (detection and attribution), coupled physical-biogeochemical modeling, and marine remote sensing. Today 18 scientists are employed within the oceanographic research unit. For more information, please go to Research at the top of this page and Oceanography.

The Oceanography Unit at the Research Department seeks a research scientist to strengthen the expertise of our group in the field of data assimilation.

The successful candidate will be expected to further develop SMHI’s circulation model and data assimilation tools for three-dimensional coupled ocean-ecosystem modeling (including physical and biogeochemical variables), both for operational uses (short-term forecasts including the water level, sea ice, water temperature, salinity, currents and algae) and for re-analysis projects, focusing on the Baltic Sea, North Sea and Arctic Ocean.

The activities will include the assessment of the current environmental status and long-term changes in biogeochemical cycles caused by eutrophication and climatic variability in the Baltic Sea and North Sea, and the development of advanced techniques for data assimilation and operational re-analysis tools.

Further, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in ongoing team projects funded by, e.g., national funding agencies, the EU, the Nordic Council of Ministers, and SMHI-wide applied research activities. Responsibilities will include planning and completion of research projects, preparation of manuscripts for publication in collaboration with other SMHI researchers, presentation of research findings at public and professional meetings, and working with SMHI researchers to pursue additional research funding. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to international networks.

The research position is permanent.

Your profile

You should have

  • demonstrated experience on ocean research and data assimilation, preferably with a PhD in oceanography, meteorology, mathematics, physics or in a related field.
  • good programming skills and experience to work on super computers
  • familiarity with Linux and Fortran90, and preferably MPI (message passing interface)
  • experience on numerical modeling
  • good oral and written command of the English language, along with a clear willingness to learn Swedish.

Good organization and communication skills are requested. You should be able to work on own initiative and be able to prioritize.
