Research Scientist/Postdoc/Scientific programmer

The Unit of Oceanography at the Research Department at SMHI is working on short and medium range ice-ocean forecasts in the Baltic and North Sea and in the Arctic Ocean, dataassimilation, process studies, climate modelling and analysis (detection and attribution), coupled physical-biogeochemical modelling, and marine remote sensing. Today 13 scientists are employed within the oceanographic research unit. For more information, please go to www.smhi.se (look for Research at the top of the welcome page and Oceanography). The contracts is initially limited to 23 months but might be prolonged depending on the future funding situation.

Three Positions as Research Scientists, Postdocs or Scientific Programmers:

  • Sea-ice numerical modelling (reference number 252).

To increase the safety of winter navigation in dynamic ice conditions in present and future climates an existing coupled multi-category, sea-ice – ocean model applied for the Baltic Sea and Arctic Ocean will be further developed. The position is part of an ongoing EU project which aims to develop an efficient ice dynamics forecasting system. The compression within the ice pack and its variability on daily to multi-annual time scales will be studied. The numerical model simulations in all three projects of this announcement will be performed on large supercomputer facilities.

  • Data assimilation (reference number 253).

To investigate the present environmental status and long-term changes of biogeochemical cycles caused by eutrophication and climate variations in the Baltic Sea a re-analysis of past climate variability for the period 1970-2008 will be performed. The re-analysis will be based on results from an existing three-dimensional coupled biogeochemical-physical ocean model of the Baltic Sea and employing advanced data assimilation techniques.

  • North Sea numerical modelling (reference number 254).

To investigate the combined impacts of changing climate and nutrient load reduction scenarios on the Baltic Sea and the North Sea an existing high-resolution three-dimensional coupled biogeochemical-physical ocean model of the Baltic Sea will be extended to include the entire North Sea. During the first year the focus is just on physical parameters. In the second year the biogeochemical sub-module will be revised taking relevant biogeochemical processes of the North Sea into account.

Successful candidates will have the possibility to contribute to international projects and networks, such as the BONUS+ program (www.bonusportal.org) and BALTEX (www.baltex-research.eu).

Your profile

You should have:

  • Demonstrated experience on ocean research, preferably with a PhD in oceanography, meteorology, mathematics, physics or in a related field
  • Good programming skills
  • Familiarity with Linux and Fortran90, and preferably MPI (message passing interface)
  • Experience on numerical modelling and, ideally, also data assimilation techniques (for the position ref no 253)
  • Good knowledge of spoken and written English is required, along with a willingness to learn Swedish

Good organization an communication skills are requested. You should have to be able to work on own initiative an be able to prioritise.
