The research activities at the Rossby Centre focus on increasing knowledge of the future climate, covering meteorological, oceanographical and hydrological aspects.
Work is conducted both on model development and evaluation of data, as well as modelling applications for process studies and climate change research in support of impact and adaptation studies.
The Rossby Centre is involved in a number of national and international projects within climate modelling, climate change research and the application of climate change information in support of downstream research and decision making.
Models to simulate the climate
The Rossby Centre develops three-dimensional climate models that mathematically describe the climate system and interactions between its components.
To serve as a national planning instrument with sufficient spatial details, global climate models must be down-scaled to regional and local level. Since 1997 the Rossby Centre has developed an international standing in the field of regional climate modelling.
The regional climate models developed at the Rossby Centre are the atmospheric model RCA, the oceanographic model RCO, the ocean-atmosphere coupled version RCAO and a version of RCA including interactive vegetation processes, RCA-GUESS.
The Rossby Centre also contributes to the development of a new Global Earth System Model, EC-EARTH, in collaboration with a consortium of European weather services, universities and the European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
