About ECDS
Environment Climate Data Sweden, ECDS, is a Swedish service facilitating the searching, publication and long-term storage of data for research in the fields of environment and climate. The ECDS-initiative was previously known under the name SND-KM, Swedish National Data Service for Climate and Environment.ECDS consists of a clearinghouse mechanism, allowing for the searching and publication of relevant data, and a service infrastructure, providing additional support to scientists throughout the whole research process.
ECDS is a joint undertaking of the Swedish Research Council (VR) and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), in collaboration with the National Supercomputer Centre (NSC) of Linköping University.
The establishment of ECDS is a response to the findings of an investigation on the status of sharing of climate and environmental data within Sweden (Eklundh, 2008).
Key tasks
- Acquiring and sharing of information on relevant data for research
- Assistance with search, documentation and publication of data
- Development of information on standards and tools for the documentation and publication of data
- Supporting researchers with best practices and recommendations on sharing and long-term storage of data
- Assistance to, in particular, smaller research groups, to find and use external storage facilities
Our vision
ECDS will facilitate the seamless sharing of scientific data and information in the fields of environment and climate. In line with the visions of, in particular, ICSU, UNESCO and GEO, and -, in close cooperation with related initiatives, ECDS will strive to enable full, open and trouble-free access to scientific data and information for the benefit of both national and international scientific communities and society as a whole.
