Environment Climate Data Sweden, ECDS, is a Swedish service facilitating the searching, publication and long-term accessibility of data for research in the fields of environment and climate. ECDS will be the central access point to decentralized data resources.

UPDATES

Solen står högt på himlen över brygga ut i havet

Summer 2013

The ECDS Helpdesk is closed between July 6 and August 4. The ECDS portal will be operational as usual, but no metadata entries will be reviewed during this period. We wish all our users a nice summer and look forward to meeting you again after August 4.

Open access to some SMHI data

SMHI has released the first batch of data with open access. Some oceanographic and meteorological data are now available to download without costs and restrictions for use at smhi.se/klimatdata/oppna-data (in Swedish). Data with open access will also be available within the fields of meteorology, hydrology and climatology. You will find the data through the ECDS portal during the year.

New storage service available at ECDS web site

Are you a researcher "with limited resources and limited need for storage capacity"? From now on, you can apply for data storage through ECDS.

Meeting with ECDS Scientific Advisory Committee

Agenda and presentations from ECDS second meeting with the Scientific Advisory Committee in March are now available at the ECDS web site.

Your contribution is useful!

ECDS is always welcoming new data sets. Right now we are looking for data from YMER80, IPY, Oden Expeditions, BY 1957 and ALBATROSS 1946-1947. Please contact Barry Broman to contribute.

New dataset on clouds, surface albedo and radiation

ECDS portal is updated with metadata about the CLARA-A1 dataset, a global dataset of cloud, surface albedo and surface radiation products derived from measurements of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on-board the polar orbiting NOAA and Metop satellites. Data sharing in support of science and society - ECDS Presentation at GEO IX

ECDS at GEO-IX-plenary

At the ninth plenary of the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) ECDS gave a presentation in a side event organized by the European Commission. GEO implements the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) through improved coordination, sustainability of observations and access to data. Already, GEOSS delivers societal benefits in the areas of disasters, health, energy, climate, water, weather, ecosystems, agriculture and biodiversity. In 2013, ECDS will integrate its data portal with GEOSS. This will help to increase the international visibility and use of ECDS data resources and deliver wider benefits of Swedish research.

GEO is a partnership of 89 governments, the European Commission and 67 international organizations. Read more on Sweden’s participation in GEO (in Swedish)

Swedish Research Council on research data

Find a presentation from Swedish Research Council on their view of research data, by Magnus Friberg at the Uppsala University seminar day on Open Access to research data. At the page, you will also find information on the Swedish Research Council’s requirements on a data publication plan. Watch the presentation (in Swedish only)

New ECDS metadata profile version

The latest upgrade of the ECDS database brings some new features. The new metadata profile version is 2.1.

Paleoclimate data in the ECDS portal

The Greater Baltic Area Paleoclimate Database, BALPAL. “We hope that by providing this service fellow researchers will be encouraged to submit their own data, and help build a high-quality base for paleoclimate research in north-western Europe”, says David Rayner, University of Gothenburg.

IPY data to the portal

Swedish IPY data can be accessed through the ECDS portal. “Sweden has committed significant efforts during the last International Polar Year. It is important to ensure the long-term accessibility of these data for the scientific community and policy makers”, says Joakim Langner, chair of the ECDS board.

Meet ECDS

Please invite us

Would you like some inspiration and practical help in order to start sharing your research data with the research community? Invite a data coordinator from ECDS. We can introduce you and your colleagues to the ECDS metadata portal and help you to register your first dataset. Contact Cecilia Bennet, Barry Broman or ECDS.

Ecology seminar at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

ECDS participated a seminar at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, March 26. Barry Broman and Jan Svensson from the ECDS team gave a presentation on how to publish metadata in the ECDS portal. We are looking forward to find your metadata in the ECDS portal!

ECDS at Polarforum

Polarforum 2013 was held March 19, 2013 in Stockholm. At the conference you could meet Barry Broman from the ECDS team, to discuss how to share your data through ECDS’ data portal.

ECDS visited Lund

The ECDS team has participated two seminars in Lund. Centre for Environmental and Climate Research (CEC), Lund University, was hosting the seminar “Infrastructure for climate and environmental science – databases” where the ECDS team was giving a presentation followed by the possibility for researchers to publish metadata in the ECDS portal with support from the team. Read the seminar programme: Infrastructure for climate and environmental science – databases

The ECDS team did also participate at the International GIS-day in Lund. For more information, please visit the web site for International GIS-day in Lund.

Seminar on Open Access to Research Data in Uppsala, Sweden

Meet ECDS at a seminar in Uppsala about how to handle and access research data. The program will among other things focus on Swedish Research Council’s requirement on a data publication plan and how ECDS creates a research infrastructure on environmental and climate data.

ECDS at Umeå University

On 4 April, ECDS visited Umeå University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Seminars were held on access to research data. We also offered personal guidance to the ECDS portal.

Reasons to use ECDS – seminar at BBCC

How can you benefit from ECDS? This was the theme of a seminar hosted by the Bert Bolin Centre at Stockholm University. The seminar encouraged researchers to contribute and use the content of ECDS. Documentation is now available.

Data publication plan

Research funding agencies sometimes require a data publication plan as an appendix to a research proposal. A support document to help with the creation of a data publication plan has been compiled by ECDS.
